Covid-19 and the detrimental vaccine conspiracy

South African Information Service Association (SAISA) is an organization focused on ensuring societies are bettered through well researched information that is aimed at assisting communities in making the right decisions, no matter the circumstances. Covid-19 has been a prevalent issue for all society for the past 15 months, the virus came out of nowhere and took many people by surprise. Apart from the health issues covid-19 brought about, it also opened doors to many unprecedented issues which many societies were not ready for, from job losses, house evictions and even companies closing down due to lockdown restrictions. With all the issues that covid brought about, one of the biggest issues has been centered around the covid-19 vaccine conspiracy theories. With all the conspiracies going around we take a deeper look at the vaccine conspiracy and its effects on society.

Covid-19 came unexpectedly and devastated countries in more ways than one, causing economic recessions and high numbers of unemployment worldwide. But as covid-19 numbers rose, so did conspiracy theories. There have been many different conspiracy theories raised in different countries and societies but the biggest theory is that people believe covid-19 and the vaccine were created  by the worlds elites to depopulate the earth and push their agenda on the human race. This conspiracy theory has been raised in multiple countries around the world and has led to people refusing to adhere to covid rules and restrictions because they believe the virus is made up. This issue has been prevalent especially amongst young people around the world. In the United States alone, more than 21% of young people have refused to take the vaccine, stating that they refuse to be guinea pigs for the elites and that since they are young they are less likely to get the virus. This was true with the first variant but as the virus mutates some more, it has developed to kill people of any age, and the false information is ensuring more people keep getting infected.

Since the beginning of the covid pandemic, rumors have been circulating about whether the pandemic itself was real, but since the news of the vaccine came out there have been a lot of speculation about what the intent was, especially since the vaccines were developed so quickly which made people become more paranoid about whether they were real or not and raised even more questions around the virus itself. The conspiracy theories at hand have been very troubling for societies and it has brought about many false information which many people believe. Amongst the many false information, there have been rumors that covid only affects women, which is totally false, in contrast men are 40% more likely than women to die from COVID-19 and almost three times more likely to require admission to an intensive treatment unit.

Conspiracy theories are very harmful to people and can lead to dangerous outcomes, and this is the same with the vaccine conspiracy theory. This conspiracy theory has created a fear in people and has led to them losing their trust in the government thus making them not want to take the vaccine. First of all covid-19 is real and there have been over 2 million covid deaths worldwide, and over 53 000 deaths in south Africa alone, and secondly the covid numbers and damages are there for all to see. So the misconception that covid isn’t real and that the vaccine is made up to simply cause deaths is a myth and will only cause more harm than good.
